Totp Ten Heroes

I guess I’m just on a big list kick. I had so much fun listing favorite serials that I decided to do the same for actors and actresses. The only stipulations I made was that they had to have appeared in more than one serial. First up my ten favorite serial hero actors.
Ralph Byrd
Clayton Moore
Buster [...]

Top Ten Mascot/Independent

For my last list of favorites I decided to combine Mascot and other Independent serial producers into one category, mainly because I didn’t have enough favorites in either to make ten. So here are my favorite serials from Mascot and the Independent studios:
Phantom Empire(1935)
The Miracle Rider (1935)
The Return of Chandu (1934)
The Three Musketeers (1933)
The Fighting [...]

Top Ten Columbia

This was the hardest list I had to compile, mainly for the fact that of the major serial producers, I have seen fewer Columbia’s than any other studio. But I managed and here it is, my top ten favorite Columbia serials:
The Spider’s Web (1938)
The Secret Code (1942)
Batman (1943)
The Phantom (193)
Jack Armstrong, The All American [...]

Serial of the Month: The Perils of Pauline

Since the past month seems to be a month of remakes; The Wolfman, The Crazies; I thought I would highlight a serial remake. Like the new versions of classic films I just mentioned, The Perils of Pauline (1933) has not fared well with the critics when compared to the original.
Professor Hargave (James Durkin) and his [...]

Villain of the Month: Jack Roberts

Jack Roberts made a good living in Hollywood as a bit player. Debuting in film as Sergeant # 2 in The Bold Caballero (1936), he followed it up by being strangled by Richard Alexander in Republic’s serial SOS Coastguard (1937). His biggest role in film was the following year, playing Dude, one of Charles Middleton’s [...]

Heroine of the Month: Jacqueline Logan

Sometimes when a promising career takes a bad turn, it is better to recognize this and move on than face continuing disappointment. Jacqueline Logan, a former Ziefield girl who for a short time became a popular performer in the twenties. She appeared in A Perfect Crime (1921), Salome Jane (1923), Manhatton (1924), The Outsider (1926) [...]

Hero of the Month: James Durkin

Many respected supporting players in film came from the stage. Though they never became major stars they worked constantly and always delivered solid performances. One such dependable supporting player from the theater was James Durkin, who came to Hollywood after decades of playing the boards.
Starting with Shadow of the Law (1930), Durkin was a tireless [...]

Republic Top Ten

Fans love to make lists of favorites and I thought I would make a list of my favorite serials but after a few days the list got ungainly, I think when I stopped I had about forty-seven and was still going. The list was also becoming extremely Republic top heavy. So instead I compiled four [...]

New Serial Book

I am always surprised and happy when someone comes out with a new book on serials, like classic horror or westerns, just when you think there is nothing new to be said someone proves you wrong. I honestly thought that Hank Davis’ two volume set Classic Cliffhangers would be the last book written on the [...]
