In an event as surreal as anything that happens in the film being discussed, The New York Times reviewed the DVD release of Phantom Empire, yes The New York Times, and what’s more it’s a favorable review of not only the DVD but of the serial itself, commenting on how everyone’s complete conviction in the proceedings keeps the film from becoming silly.  All I can say is “What the…?”  Man, how times have changed, could you even imagine Captain Video or The Last Frontier getting reviewed by such a pretigious paper back when they were released on DVD?  Me neither.  If you want to see the article it’s at:

A quick blog on two new releases that are coming out today on DVD.  Alpha Video is re-releasing Zorro’s Fighting Legion, now with all twelve chapters on one disc.  I don’t know about you, but if you are like me and trying to keep your collection from taking up too much space, switching out a serial that was on two discs for one disc is a good move.  VCI is releasing a DVD version of Jungle Queen starring Ruth Roman.  I have the VHS version myself and was not too impressed with the serial as a whole, so it is doubtful I’ll be replacing it with a DVD copy, spacing issues not withstanding.

Well, I sent off my first article for At the Bijou.  I actually completed it about two weeks ago but my e-mail was having problems and every time I would send it, the e-mail got returned undelivered.  Bijou Bob, due to an understandably overworked schedule,  had referred me to his associate Ron, but for some reason every time I tried to contact Ron my e-mail wouldn’t get through.  I finally sent my article to Bob, who passed it on to Ron and they are looking into my e-mail problem.
