CHAPTER SIX: PRISONER EXCHANGE

Conan is walking with Valeria.  It is obvious as they talk that the Princess is infatuated with Conan, and that Conan is starting to feel the same way.  Rounding a corner, they run into Yora and Balthus.  Conan immediately fights them, but is overpowered and knocked unconscious.

Yora grabs Valeria and says that Doom will be pleased to have her as a guest again.  Balthus tells him to go on with the Princess while he takes care of Conan.  After Yora drags the Princess away.  Balthus draws his sword and starts to bring it down toward Conan’s limp form.

Zula and Borak round a corner, arguing over who the princess’ handmaiden likes better when they see Balthus about to kill Conan.  Zula grabs Balthus’ sword arm, while Borak jumps on Balthus’ back.  Balthus struggles but is quickly subdued.

Together, with a revived Conan, they take Balthus to King Kull and Queen  Zenobia.  When they learn that Yora has escaped with the Princess, Zenobia breaks down and has to be taken to her chambers.  Conan suggests that Doom might be willing to trade Balthus for Valeria.  A messenger is dispatched to make terms for a prisoner exchange.

Doom receives the message.  He is infuriated at Balthus’ capture.  Then he smiles evilly, telling Yora he’ll agree to the exchange, but not in the way his enemies expect, then emits a small sinister laugh.

Balthus is put in the dungeon.  Doom’s mysterious confederate releases Balthus and shows him where he can slip out of the castle.  Conan just happens look out a window and see Balthus getting away.  Leaping out out of the window on to a horse, he chases Balthus down and recaptures him.

The messenger returns with Doom’s reply.  He will agree to an exchange on neutral ground halfway between the castle and Doom’s tower, as long as Conan comes alone.  Conan agrees and word is sent back to Doom.

Conan shows up at the meeting place, a clearing in the woods, with Balthus in tow.  Doom shows up with Valeria.  They agree to let their two prisoners go at the same time to walk toward them, everybody leaving when they finish crossing the clearing.  When both get halfway across, Doom signals Balthus, who grabs Valeria,  while archers appear behind Conan and fire arrows at his back….

RECAP:

Conan–Sneak into Thulsa Doom’s castle with Zula and Borack to destroy Doom’s War Wagon.

CHAPTER FIVE: DEADLY BLADE

Conan, Zula and Borack are brought before a door, which is opened and they are thrown into a shallow pit.  Doom chortles that he hopes they’re not too uncomfortable, but they won’t have to endure it very long.  After the door shuts, water starts pouring into the pit from a pipe above their heads.  Borack climbs onto Conan’s shoulders to try and plug the pipe with their cloaks, but can’t. The pit quickly fills with water and is soon over their heads.

Balthus sends Almuric to check to see if they are dead. When Almuric opens the door Conan and Zula grab him and pull him into the pit, then the three friends scramble out, shutting the door behind them.

Borack is all for  getting away while the getting is good, while Zulla wants to take the fight to Doom .  The two men start arguing, till Conan gets between them and and says the most important thing is to disable the War Wagon. The three friends find the War Wagon and Borack, after looking it over, removes a piece of the engine that makes it run.  They then make their way to the stables, knock out the guard and steal three horses.

Thulsa Doom discovers the sabotage done to his machine and flies into a rage.  Getting a bird he sends a note to his confederate in Kull’s castle to leave a door unlocked by the stables.  He then dispatches Yora and Balthus to retrieve the machine part.

Conan and his friends arrive back at the castle, where Conan gives the part to Thoth Amon and tells him they have nothing to fear  from the War Wagon.  Thoth Amon takes the part to his lab to study.

Yora and Balthus come to the unlocked door by the stables and find a note from Doom’s confederate telling them the part is in Thoth Amon’s lab.  The two henchmen make their way to the lab.  Sneaking up behind Thoth Amon, they knock him out and grab the part.

CHAPTER FOUR: THE PIT OF DEATH

Conan, Zula and Borack are on the battlements, fighting Doom’s soldiers.  Conan leaps to attack Yora as he attempts to come over the wall.  Conan pushes the ladder Yora is on away from the wall, but Yora grabs onto Conan and both men fall to the ground outside of the castle.  Conan, stunned, is laying right in the path of a squad of Doom’s men on horseback.   Seeing him, they spur their horses forward to trample him to death.

Conan comes to his senses in time to see his danger and rolls out of the way.  Zula and Borack leep down from the wall and help Conan fight with  Yora.  Yora is knocked unconscious.  Conan strips his clothes off and puts them on while Zula and Borack tie up Yora.  Wearing Yora’s  clothes, Conan orders a retreat.

Conan explains he is going to Doom’s castle to destroy the War Wagon. Zula and Borack knock out two soldiers and take their clothes.  They join Conan on Yora’s chariot and all three follow Doom’s soldiers to the cave entrance under the castle.

Word is sent to the soldiers that Doom demands Yora’s presence in the throne room to explain why he called off the attack.  Conan sees this as the perfect opportunity to slip away and search for the War Wagon.  Unfortunately before he and his friend’s can do this,their ruse is discovered when Yora comes stumbling in and collapses in front of the soldiers.

Conan, Zula and Borack run for it and are chased by the soldiers.  They get trapped in a dead end hall way and turning their backs to the wall, the three friends put up a tremendous fight, but are out numbered and eventually captured.

They are brought before Doom, who tells Conan he is impressed with Conan and offers him a position in his army. Conan refuses while Zula and Borack make insulting wisecracks.  Infuriated, Doom orders them thrown into the Pit.
