CHAPTER 9: THE PIT OF DOOM

Doc and his friends are leaving the courthouse all smiles congratulating both Doc and Ham. A man on a roof top aims a rifle at Doc and shoots. Doc grabs his chest and collapses on the ground.
The Fab Five gather around their fallen leader, Johnny rips open Doc’s shirt and is pleased to see that he was wearing his bullet proof vest, the bullet merely knocked the wind out of Doc. As they are helping Doc to his feet, Renny spots the man trying to escape along the roof tops. Doc has everyone separate to surround the man, while he nimble climbs a rain spout to the roof and chases the man down on foot.

After leaping several rooftops, Doc catches up to the assassin. He tries to get down a fire escape but sees Ham and Monk coming up it, the door to the roof bursts open with Renny, Johnny and Long Tom emerging from the stairs. With all routes of escape blocked the man surprisingly jumps at Doc to try and fight his way to freedom. Doc quickly subdues him.

Placing his fingers on certain spots around the man’s head, Doc paralyzes him while putting him into a hypnotic state where he is unable to lie. He says his name is Meeks and he was hired to shoot Doc when he came out of the courthouse. He doesn’t know the name of the man who hired him, but has a phone number he was to call when he completed the job.

Doc quickly makes arrangements to have Meeks shipped to his private sanitarium, where he will be rehabilitated into a law abiding citizen. Then he traces the phone number and finds that it is a phone booth at Grand Central Station. A watch on the booth proves uneventful as no one goes to it to wait for Meeks’ call.

Later Doc receives a call from Pat. Natalia is starting to frequent Pat’s beauty parlor. She gives Doc the time of her next appointment. When Natalia gets her hair done, Doc is hiding around the corner. When she leaves, he follows her. She goes to a house out in the hills. Doc waits several minutes after she enters the house, then sneaks in through a ground floor window. When he touches the door knob to exit the empty room, an electrical shock knocks him unconscious.

Tarnack and his men enter the room. Tarnack chuckles at the ease with which they captured Doc. He has his men remove Doc’s utility vest and then carry him to another room. When Doc wakes up he hears Tarnack taunting him from a loud speaker, berating him for walking into such an obvious trap. Then the floor under Doc moves to reveal an alligator pit below. Tarnack wishes Doc a fond farewell, then a motor starts up. The wall starts moving, pushing Doc toward the gaping pit and the hungry alligators waiting below.

“Tarnack is committing another robbery! Can the Fabulous Five stop him! Pat looks to be in deadly danger! Who can rescue her! Don’t fail to miss THE DEADLY BEAM! Chapter 10 of DOC SAVAGE at this theater next week!”

Recap: “Doc Savage, fearless Champion of Justice, has returned from the North Pole to discover that Tarnack is using his Sonic Vibrator Gun to rob banks. Creating a Sonic Vibrator Gun detector, Doc and his Fabulous Five track them to another robbery!”

CHAPTER 8: HERO ON TRIAL

Doc and the Fab Five surprise Tarnack’s men in the middle of emptying a bank vault. A fight breaks out with Doc and his men getting the better of the scared gangsters. Suddenly Tarnack appears out of the shadows with one of Doc’s dart guns. He expertly shoots Doc and his five friends.

The sight of his enemies helpless causes Tarnack to gloat until he sees that the Sonic Vibrator Gun was damaged in the fight. He starts to berate his men for their stupidity, but then stops when he hears a police siren approaching in the distance. Tarnack gets a crafty look on his face, sets the Sonic Vibrator Gun to explode, then hurriedly leaves with his men and the loot.

Doc and his men suddenly jump to their feet. Quickly seeing that the gun is about to self destruct, Doc gets his friends into the vault and pulls the door closed after them. The machine starts emitting a loud whine that builds and builds until it explodes in a huge shower of sparks.

Doc pushes the door back open and they climb out of the vault, Monk commenting that it’s a good thing Doc had them all immunized against their own dart guns. Just then Inspector Nolan arrives and demands to know what is going on. As Doc tries to explain, Nolan immediately latches onto the concept that the gun causing the robberies belongs to Doc and promptly arrests him. He is about to arrest the Fab Five as well, but Doc says they were all innocent bystanders and had nothing to do with the robberies. Ham immediately steps forward as Doc’s attorney and goes with him to the police station.

News of Doc’s arrest is broadcast. Tarnack and his men hear it over the radio. Tarnack has a nice chuckle of the irony of Doc being tried for the crimes he and his men have been committing. Natalia voices concern about Doc getting off, after all Ham is the shrewdest criminal attorney in the country. Tarnack scoffs at her concerns and plans to have a good seat at the trial.

The trial opens with a scathing indictment of Doc from D.A. Warwick, who paints a nasty picture of Doc and his exploits. During the course of the trial Ham expertly dismantles the D.A.’s case, and after bringing to light that the money stolen from the bank was not on Doc or any of the men with him at the bank, Doc is found not guilty. Judge Watkins releases Doc, a free man.

Natalia leans over to Tarnack and whispers that she told him so. Tarnack whispers back to shut up, he has a back up plan put in place just in case this happened. Doc and his friends are leaving the courthouse all smiles, congratulating both Doc and Ham. A man on a roof top aims a rifle at Doc and shoots. Doc grabs his chest and collapses on the ground.

“Can the Fabulous Five carry on alone? Why is Pat fixing Natalia’s hair? All pretty girls do have to look their best after all. Be sure to see THE PIT OF DOOM, Chapter 9 of DOC SAVAGE at this theater next week!”

Recap: “Doc Savage, fearless Champion of Justice, fights a never ending battle against the criminal underworld! Doc and his Fabulous Five are pursuing master criminal Tarnack, who has stolen some of Doc’s fantastic inventions, and are unaware of the danger that awaits ahead of them on the arctic trail!”

CHAPTER 7: SONIC CRIME WAVE

Natalia come up beside Tarnack and cracks that if everyone is through playing around they might be interested in the weird sleds that are coming up in the distance. Tarnack’s eyes almost pop out of his head as he turns to see Doc and his men on their pursuit vehicles. His immediate fear is quickly replaced by evil cunning as he spots that they will have to round a bend that hangs over a cliff to get to him.

Shouldering the Sonic Vibrator Gun, Tarnack gloats that he has found the perfect test for his new weapon. Moving to a better vantage point, Tarnack aims the gun at the path in front of where Doc and his men will have pass over to get around the mountain and fires the weapon. The sonic vibrations set up by the gun cause the cliff edge to crumble and collapse just and Doc and the Fab Five start to cross it. The six men tumble helplessly into a deep chasm to their apparent doom.

The snow lays in large heaps at the bottom of the chasm. Slowly it starts to move as Doc and his friends laboriously dig themselves free. Brushing snow off themselves, they find everybody is unhurt. Doc and the Fab Five then start the long climb back up to the trail. Once up top they find that Tarnack and his men are long gone. Doc and his men head on down the trail on foot, Monk and Ham arguing with each other the entire way. Coming to Tuka’s village, they are greeted warmly by the tribe and supplied with dogs and sleds to get back to civilization.

Newspaper headlines declare a new crime wave has hit the city. Several banks have been robbed with a strange device that causes the locks on vault doors to crack apart. Tarnack is ecstatic as he reads the reports of his gang’s exploits. Natalia comes in and reports that Doc was seen arriving in town. Tarnack immediately glares at his men and calls them all idiots for allowing him to live. When Brown defensively says that it was Tarnack who was handling the gun, Tarnack roars for him to shut up.

All of the men back away into a corner and cower as Tarnack goes a mini-tirade. While the men all visibly shake in their shows during this, Natalia is obviously unimpressed. As Tarnack finally loses steam she asks him what he’s going to do now as Doc will find a way to put their stolen equipment out of order. Tarnack glowers at her for a moment then suddenly smiles and cryptically says he already has a plan to prevent that.

Doc is convinced that the robberies are being committed by Tarnack using the Sonic Vibrator Gun he stole from the Fortress of Solitude. Long Tom, who helped Doc build it, cobbles together a Sonic Vibrator Detector. The six men settle down and wait for the gang to use their stolen invention again. The Detector goes off a few nights later. Doc and his men use it to track down the gang as they are in the act of robbing a bank.

The sight of his enemies lying helplessly unconscious causes Tarnack to gloat until he sees that the Sonic Vibrator Gun was damaged in the fight. He starts to berate his men for their stupidity, but then stops when he hears a police siren approaching in the distance. Tarnack gets a crafty look on his face, sets the Sonic Vibrator Gun to overload, then hurriedly leaves with his men and the money. The machine begins emitting a loud whine that builds and builds until it explodes in a huge shower of sparks.

“Does Tarnack now have free reign to loot the city at will? And what is Tarnack doing in this court room? Surely he isn’t planning on taking over City Hall! Find out in HERO ON TRIAL, the Eighth spine tingling episode of DOC SAVAGE, at this theater next week!”
