CHAPTER 3: ARCTIC AVALANCHE

Doc goes to the warehouse and sneaks in through a window. He finds the room where Pat is being held and frees her. Suddenly Karnack and his men appear with guns drawn. Tarnack taunts Doc by calling him stupid to not know it was a trap. Doc counters that he knew it was a trap all along. Just then Monk, Ham, Rennie, Johnny and Long Tom burst through the front door, jump the henchmen from behind, causing them to drop their guns and a fight erupts.

During the fracas a lamp gets over turned and sets the warehouse on fire. Tarnack manages to get hold of a gun and holds Doc and his men at bay. Once his men are out of the building, Tarnack leaves, locking the door behind him, trapping them in the burning building. Doc says he has something that can open that door and heads for it just as a burning timber falls from the ceiling and lands on him, trapping Doc under it as the fire gets closer and closer to the heroes.

Rennie runs to the door, rears back, and punches his right fist through the door. Reaching through the hole he unlocks the door. Monk, Ham, Long Tom, and Johnny heave the timbers off Doc and carry him outside, where he quickly recovers. Pat spots the just disappearing car of Tarnack and his men. Everyone piles into Doc’s super speedster and give chase.

Butch spots the car coming after them and the henchmen start firing at it, only to quickly discover that it is bullet proof. Doc runs them off the road and another fight erupts. Things are going well for the heroes, until Tarnack tosses a smoke grenade into the fracas, allowing him and his men to escape.

Once the smoke clears, Doc examines the area around the fight and discovers a torn pocket from one of the men with a handkerchief in it. Taking it back to the lab Doc examines it under a microscope and discovers traces of a specific kind of coal soot on it. Tracing it to abandoned factory, Doc and his men head there only to discover it is empty. Johnny finds a note on a table in the office addressed to Doc. It is from Tarnack, saying he knew Doc would trace them there and he just wanted him to know that he has discovered the location of the Fortress of Solitude.

Long Tom thinks it’s a trick, but Doc says they can’t take that chance. He tells Pat to go home while he prepares for the trip. Pat quickly agrees, too quickly for Doc’s liking. Later at the airport Doc’s gleaming plane takes off and is immediately followed by a smaller plane. Back on the ground Doc and the Fab Five watch this with obvious amusement, commenting on how Doc’s robot controlled plane will lead Pat far away from any danger.

Doc travels to the South Pole where he enters a large cavernous cave. While feeling around the wall for a hidden button, Tarnack and his henchmen sneak up on him. Tarnack congratulates the startled Doc on leading them to his Fortress. Doc laughs and says he knew it was a trick all along, and that this isn’t the Fortress. The Fab Five come up behind the men and another fight breaks out. Tarnack tosses a gas bomb into the midst of the fighting, which overcomes the heroes.

Tarnack and his men escape. He spots a precariously perched snow cap on the mountain above them. Firing a flare gun into it causes a massive avalanche that buries Doc and the Fab Five in the cave. Surveying the piled up ice and rock, Tarnack smirks and says, “Let’s see his fancy gadgets get him out of that!”

Recap: “Criminal mastermind Tarnack has kidnapped Doc Savage’s friends to lure him into a trap so he can force the location of Doc’s Fortress of Solitude from him. Doc and Pat follow clues that lead to a seemingly deserted house where Tarnack captures Doc!”

CHAPTER 2: INFERNO OF DOOM

Tarnack has everyone leave, then closes the door to the room as he leaves and opens a small window to see in. When Doc comes to, Tarnack taunts him, bragging about his own cleverness in tricking Doc with the planted plumaria clue. He then tells Doc that he had originally intended to force Doc to tell him where his Fortress of Solitude is but he thinks he can get the information easier from Pat. Since he doesn’t need Doc anymore, Tarnack just wanted to say goodbye. Tarnack closes the window and flips a switch next to it.

Doc hears a large motor start up and sees the wall at one end of the room start to move toward him, while the wall he is near starts moving toward the other wall. Realizing he is about to be crushed between them he looks around the room, but it is completely barren, there is nothing he can use to jam against the moving walls and stop them. He checks the door that Tarnack had exited through, but it opens outward, so Doc can’t pop the hinges off and pry the door open. Bracing his back against the far wall he faces the other wall as they creep closer and closer toward each other.

Thinking quickly, Doc puts his ear next to the wall where he can hear the motor that is controlling the walls. When he locates the room on the other side of the wall, Doc pulls a small explosive from his utility vest under his shirt and blows a hole in the wall big enough for him to climb through. Once in the room he sees that that there is a door, but finds it is locked. Luckily this one opens toward the room and using a small screwdriver from his vest, Doc pops the hinges off and pries the door open.

Once in the hallway, Doc starts exploring the place and finds the room where Monk, Ham, Rennie, Johnny and Long Tom are chained to a wall. When they start to talk, Doc motions them to be silent, and using a lock pick from his vest, frees them from their manacles. They are discovered as they leave the room and a massive fight breaks out with lots of punching, kicking and opponents getting flipped over combatant’s shoulders.

Tarnack stops the fight by producing Pat, who he holds at gun point. Doc and the Fab Five are locked in the room they were held prisoner while the villains make their escape. Doc and his companions break out of the room but find the house is completely deserted. They head back to Doc’s penthouse to work out a new plan to rescue Pat.

Tarnack takes Pat to another hideout to try and force the location of the Fortress from her. It soon becomes evident that only Doc knows its location. Not to be so easily foiled, Tarnack comes up with a brilliant plan to force Doc to tell him where it is. Tarnack has Pat taken to a warehouse, where she is locked in a room where a disabled phone is sitting under a table. Pat manages to fix the phone by reattaching the wires to the call box and gets a message to Doc.

CHAPTER1: THE MAN OF BRONZE

“The City was rampant with crime! Banks robbed with impunity! Buildings burned! People attacked! No one was safe! Then came the arrival of Doc Savage! Trained since childhood to be the ultimate in physical and mental perfection, he is a renowned physician, scientist, and athlete who, with his five companions, all experts in their chosen fields, are ready to lay down their lives at any moment to fight against the forces of evil for the good of all!”

Tarnack, a master criminal calls his men together. He has a special job for them. They haven’t been able to pull any good jobs because of all the new security devices invented by Doc Savage. It only stands to reason that he would also have inventions that can beat them at his famed Fortress of Solitude. Tarnack has a plan to make Savage tell him where the Fortress is.

Later that day Monk, a noted chemist, and Ham, a well respected lawyer, are coming out of a restaurant having an argument. They come upon Natalia trying to load a cumbersome stack of boxes into a taxi cab. They immediately leap to her rescue, help her load the cab, try to make a date with her and end up arguing over who gets the first date. Laughing, Natalia says if they will go with her to her apartment building to help her unload, she will go out to dinner with both of them. The two men immediately scramble into the cab and are instantly gassed into unconsciousness.

While this is happening the other members of Doc’s team are grabbed. Engineer Rennie goes to answer the phone at a building site and is hit from behind by Brown. Archaeologist Johhny is coming out of a lecture and gets jabbed in the arm by Karl who pretends to be a passing blind man. Johnny collapses on the sidewalk and is loaded into a miraculously arriving ambulance. Electrical engineer Long Tom is accosted in his lab by Taylor, Butch and Wheeler. A fight breaks out, but the three men over power Long Tom and drag him away.

Doc Savage returns to his penthouse apartment from a sojourn to his Fortress of Solitude where he had been doing some research for a cure for cancer. He finds an oblong package waiting for him. After using special devices to determine that it doesn’t contain an explosive device, Doc opens it and finds Ham’s sword cane with a note attached. The note says that all of his friends have been kidnapped and if he wants them returned to be on the corner of Bleecher Street and River Avenue at midnight.

Doc examines the box and finds some trace amounts of plumeria. A quick search of his records shows that only one man breeds the tropical plant in the area, a Herman Banker. Doc heads for his garage and finds his cousin Pat there. She tells him that some men tried to kidnap her but that she got away. Doc tells her that Monk, Ham, Rennie, Johhny and Long Tom have all been captured. He wants Pat to go up to the penthouse to wait while he runs down a clue. Pat insists on coming with him and Doc, in a hurry, reluctantly agrees.

They arrive at Banker’s address and Doc studies the dark house from the car. It doesn’t seem to be occupied. Suspicious, Doc and Pat make their way around back. When they check the back door to see if it is locked, a trap door opens and they are dropped into a room where Doc is immediately jumped by Brown, Taylor, Karl, Butch and Wheeler. Doc puts up a good fight but is eventually knocked out. They grab Pat as Tarnack and Natalia enter the room.

Natalia looks at the prone form of Doc and blurts out “He’s gorgeous!” Everyone turns to look at her. Embarrassed, she gets all tough and starts wanting to know how he is gong to be made to talk. Tarnack looks at Pat for a few seconds and says he doesn’t need Doc anymore. He has Pat dragged away to another room.
