Villain of the Month:Gordon Hart

Some actors are blessed with what in a normal profession would be detrimental, facial features and an attitude that immediately cause distrust in people.  Such an actor was Gordon Hart.  Most of his short lived career was spent in bit parts in films like Dracula’s Daughter (1936), The Charge of the Light Brigade (1936), San Quentin (1937)and The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (1939).

It was in the serials that Hart could really display he acting and use his blessing to it’s full potential.  His first and biggest role was in Universal’s Radio Patrol (1937) playing an unscrupulous businessman who is trying to get custody of a young boy so he can steal his murdered father’s flexible steel formula and may even be the actual killer.  Other serial work included playing a crooked businessman in Republic’s Dick Tracy Returns (1938), and playing one of a list of suspects who may be the mystery villain in Columbia’s The Spider’s Web (1938) and again in The Shadow (1940), where his oily screen persona was put to good use.
