Villain of the Month: Noel Cravat

A distinctive face is more mportant to an actor than any other asset, a good example is Noel Cravat, a good actor who worked steadily more for his exotic looks than for the talent he brought to his parts.  A versatile character actor he was usually cast as a foreign character like a Czech dockhand in Hostages (1943) or a Russian singer in The Razor’s Edge (1946).

Most often he was cast as an Asian character in many films like Shadow of the Thin Man (1941), Secret Agent of Japan (1942), Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves (1944), Dragon Seed (1944), Women in the Night (1948) and Dragon’s Gold (1954).  Other non Asian roles included Wonder Man (1945) as an Opera singer, Little Miss Broadway (1947), The 5000 fingers of Dr T (1954) and irronically Flight to Hong Kong (1956).

His serial work consisted of playing a Japanese pilot for spy Lionel Atwill in Universal’s Junior G-Men of the Air (1942), a Japanese henchman for spy Nino Pippitone in Republic’s G-Men vs the Black Dragon (1943) and a minor Moon soldier in Republic’s Radar Men From the Moon (1952)
