Villain of the Month: Richard Irving

It is always good to have a diverse career, especially in Hollywood, where if one thing doesn’t work you can always move in another direction.  Richard Irving is a perfect example, he went from a character actor to TV director.

His film roles were mainly small supporting parts in films as diverse as Miracle On 34th Street (1947), Scene of the Crime (1949), Armored Car Robbery (1950) and Woman in the Dark (1952).  His biggest role was playing secondary henchman Ryan, helping  primary henchman Harry Lauter in Gregory Gay’s attempt to soften Earth up for a Martian invasion in Republic’s Flying Disc Man From Mars (1950).

Switching to behind the camera, Irving sustained a 30 plus year career, directing episodes of Terry and the Pirates, the Darren McGavin version of Mickey Spillane’s Mike Hammer, State Trooper, Checkmate, Colombo, The Six Million Dollar Man, CHiPs and Airwolf.
