Heroine of the Month: Vondell Darr
Hollywood is filled with the stories of popular child stars who never maintained their career after puberty. Some like Jackie Coogan continue working at whatever jobs come their way, while others faded into obscurity. One of the latter is Vondell Darr, who is better remembered today for her one serial appearance than for her hey day as a silent star.
Billed as Baby Vondell Darr, she made several popular films in the mid to late twenties such as The City That Never Sleeps (1924), The Pony Express (1925) and The Dummy (1929). Her career stalled with the coming of sound.
She attempted a return to film in the late thirties with small roles in That Certain Age (1938) and Andy Hardy Gets Spring Fever (1939). Her biggest role at this time was playing the daughter of a kidnapped engraver in the Universal serial Scouts to the Rescue (1939).
She made a few more appearances in Strike Up the Band (1940) and Men of Boys Town (1942) before calling it quits.
