CHAPTER NINE: SEA ATTACK

Heading for a port town, Conan starts looking around the dock area for an appropriate ship and crew to hire.  Suddenly Conan sees a woman being attacked in an alley. Rushing to the rescue, Conan fights off the attackers, who run away.  As Conan turns to the woman he just rescued, she hits him in the head with a cudgel.  Conan crumples to the ground, unconscious.

Conan comes to laying on a bed.  The woman who hit him is sitting at a table watching him.  When Conan sits up, she draws a sword.  The woman introduces herself as Red Sonya, captain of the pirate ship Tigress.  She knows that Conan is working for King Kull and plans to hold him for a large ransom.

Conan chuckles at the notion and counters with an offer to hire her ship.  Sonya names the price of his ransom for hiring the ship  and Conan agrees, saying she will get paid when they arrive at Kull’s castle.  They shake on it and Sonya give the order to haul in the anchor and set sail.

When they arrive at the castle’s dock, Red Sonya is introduced to Zula and Borak while Thoth Amon supervises the loading of his explosive on board.  Doom’s ally writes a message warning of an attack on his castle from the sea and sends it via a bird.

Conan, Zula and Borak set sail with Red Sonya on the Tigress for Doom’s castle.  Anchoring off shore, Conan uses a catapult to start lobbing the explosive filled bags at Doom’s tower.  After the first one hits, a door at the top of the tower opens and a strange flying machine emerges, flying straight for the ship.  Conan tries to hit it with the explosive but it is able to veer out of the way.  Once over the ship the flying machine drops an explosive of it’s own.  The Tigress explodes in a huge fire ball…..

CHAPTER EIGHT: DISGUISED TREACHERY

At Kull’s castle the sentries hear the approach of Doom’s War Wagon.  Everyone prepares for an attack and are shocked to see the Wagon pull up to the castle gate with Conan strapped to the front.  Yora speaks to Conan from inside the Wagon, demanding he order the gates opened or he’ll ram the door with Conan on the front and crush him. Conan spits out “Go ahead and ram”, through gritted teeth.  Yora backs up and then hurtles the Wagon forward toward the gate at full speed.

Zula calls out to open the gate.  A guard does and the Wagon speeds into the courtyard, followed by Doom’s soldiers.  Kull’s soliders engage them in a huge battle.  Borak gets to the wagon and cuts Conan free.  Grabbinng a dropped sword, Conan enters the fray. Suddenly Thoth Amon appears and starts lobbing small bags topped with a burning wick at Doom’s men.  The bags explode, driving off the invaders.

After the battle is over and the gates closed, Conan asks Thoth Amon what the bags he was throwing were.  He tells Conan that they are a new explosive powder he had been working on for some time and just now perfected.  Conan says that the powder gives him an idea on how to rescue Valeria and take care of Doom.

After discussing his plans with Kull, Conan leaves on his own.  Heading for a port town, Conan starts looking around the dock area for an appropriate ship and crew to hire.  Suddenly Conan sees a woman being attacked in an alley. CHAPTER SEVEN: CRASHING DESTRUCTION

Conan shows up at the meeting place, a clearing in the woods, with Balthus in tow, unaware that Zula and Borak have followed them.  Doom shows up with Valeria.  They agree to let their two prisoners go at the same time to walk toward them, everybody leaving when they finish crossing the clearing.  When both get halfway across, Doom signals Balthus, who grabs Valeria,  while archers appear behind Conan and aim arrows at his back.

Zula and Borak jump out of the bushes and rush the archers, causing them to fire before they have properly aimed and the arrows all miss Conan.  Doom and Balthus leave on horseback with Valeria.  Conan, Zula and Borak fight the archers and run them off.

Conan grabs one before he can get away and knocks him out.  Sending Zula and Borak back to the castle with the prisoner, Conan puts on the other man’s clothes and heads for Doom’s castle.  Sneaking in through the stables, Conan plans to rescue Valeria.

He is quickly spotted by Salazar and Amulric, who chase him into the tower.  Yora and Balthus join the chase, trapping Conan in a dead end corridor.  Conan fights the four men but is quickly overpowered.   He is brought before Doom, who says Conan is going to help them get into Kull’s castle.  Conan scoffs at Doom’s request.  Doom replies he wasn’t asking, he was explaining what he is going to do with Conan.
