Money
Many people make money from selling serials. Nobody get’s wealthy from it, but a good dealer can make a nice living. A lot of the fan community is divided into two camps, Pro Grood and Anti Grood. Most of this stems from his DVD releases at the Serial Squadron, which causes many fans to rage on the message boards. There is good and bad about the DVDs. The good is that he releases rare serials, like The Lone Ranger (1938) and King of the Mounties (1942). The bad is that he tends to tweak them with new music, or added color sequences, which just drives the purists up the wall. Things aren’t helped by Grood’s less than diplomatic response to complaints that can come off as shrill and overly defensive. Which of course just fans the flames. A part of me thinks it might just be a shrewd business move on his part to help boost sales, nothing get’s people’s attention like controversy and curiosity over what all the fuss is about. After all, money made from serial DVD’s is a very small pie which can cause a lot of fighting to get the biggest slice, and nobody likes divying up crumbs. My personal take on the whole things is this. I’m a purist, I like to view serials as they were originally released. So I don’t buy from the Serial Squadron, but I also don’t go on the message boards and rant about Grood either.
