Money

Many people make money from selling serials.  Nobody get’s wealthy from it, but a good dealer can make a nice living.  A lot of the fan community is divided into two camps, Pro Grood and Anti Grood.  Most of this stems from his DVD releases at the Serial Squadron, which causes many fans to rage on the message boards.  There is good and bad about the DVDs.  The good is that he releases rare serials, like The Lone Ranger (1938) and King of the Mounties (1942).  The bad is that he tends to tweak them with new music, or added color sequences, which just drives the purists up the wall.  Things aren’t helped by Grood’s less than diplomatic response to complaints that can come off as shrill and overly defensive.  Which of course just fans the flames.  A part of me thinks it might just be a shrewd business move on his part to help boost sales, nothing get’s people’s attention like controversy and curiosity over what all the fuss is about.  After all, money made from serial DVD’s is a very small pie which can cause a lot of fighting to get the biggest slice, and nobody likes divying up crumbs.  My personal take on the whole things is this.  I’m a purist, I like to view serials as they were originally released.  So I don’t buy from the Serial Squadron, but I also don’t go on the message boards and rant about Grood either.

Message Boards

I am not much for posting on message boards.  The serial fan community is a small one and as with all small communities, things tend to get ugly.  Every message board I’ve been on starts to split into camps where every slight, real or imagined generates into a war of words, and the words get nasty.  And who wants to get in the middle of that?  Fandom is supposed to be an enjoyable hobby, but if all you do is defend your opinion for no other reason than it’s not in line with a click that are “experts” in the field, you get ridiculed mercilessly.  It’s like being back in high school, which drives many away from the message boards and ultimately serials as well.
